Programming non-AT&T devices with the correct APN and MMS data settings

( APN Settings )

Whether you are using a compatible unlocked device from another carrier, purchased directly from the manufacturer or an AT&T branded device, you need a compatible SIM card, a compatible data plan, and your device must be programmed with the correct data connection settings to use 4G (HSPA+)/4G LTE data services.

Compatible SIM Card

If you recently purchased a new SIM card from AT&T or an authorized retailer, you should already have the correct type SIM card. If you are using a SIM card from some other source or if you moved an active SIM card to a new device, check the SIM number to make sure it is compatible. The SIM number is on the credit card sized SIM holder and on the SIM card itself. If your SIM card is active, be sure to turn off your device before removing it.

  • If the ninth and tenth digits of the SIM number are 25, 26, 27 or 28, your SIM card is compatible.
  • If the ninth and tenth digits are 21, 22, 23 or 24 you need a new SIM card.

For example:

  • 89014103279999999999 – Compatible
  • 89014103249999999999 – Not CompatibleAT&T SIM Card ExampleAT&T SIM Card Example

If you need a new SIM card, you have several options but only the account holder or authorized user can order and activate a new SIM card.

  • Take the device to an AT&T company store to have the SIM card replaced at no charge. For fastest service at the store, make an appointment using our store locator.
  • If there is no AT&T company store in your area, you can take the device to an authorized retailer or other retail location that sells AT&T wireless services. However, not all retail locations stock SIM cards and retailers may charge a fee for the new SIM card.
  • Call Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 and we will ship a free SIM card to the physical address on the account. When you receive the new SIM card, the account holder or an authorized user will need to call Customer Service to complete the activation.

Compatible Data Plan

If you moved an active SIM card to a new device and did not notify us of that change, your existing data plan might not be compatible. The account holder or authorized user can take the device to an AT&T company store or contact Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to update the device information on the account and make any required rate plan changes.

Correct Data Settings

To use data services on our network with a non-AT&T device, you may need to program the data settings. If you are using an AT&T device, it should already have the correct settings but if you’re having trouble accessing data services, please contact Customer Service for assistance.

The sections below provide the correct settings and steps for programming based on your device type and operating system.

Some older Android Smartphones may use the wap.cingular APN as the default AT&T setting. This APN no longer supports Smartphone data connectivity and you will need to program the new settings. If you are unable to program your device following the steps below, refer to your user manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance.

  1. Access the Settings menu.
  2. Locate and select Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
  3. Select Mobile Networks.
  4. Select Access Point Names.
  5. Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
  6. Program each field using the settings below.
  7. Save the changes to return to the APNs menu and select the new APN.
