The Mission: Willow Cherry Advocate for Justice
Willow leads this organization with a singular focus: To provide a shield for those caught in the gears of a broken system. He brings lived experience to the forefront of policy reform, ensuring that “Correction” means “Recovery,” not just “Detention.”
Willow Cherry Advocate and trained Adult Peer Support Specialist (APSS) operates at the intersection of justice and recovery in Lexington, KY. With a background in Cybersecurity Basics (AT&T Certified) and specialized training in Trauma-Informed Care, Willow combines lived experience with rigorous professional protocols to help others navigate recovery.
For six years, I was silenced by a legal system that values process over people. After enduring nearly 2,000 days of pre-trial detention and the coercion of a forced plea to secure my freedom, I have emerged not as a statistic, but as a survivor. The Willow Cherry Justice & Recovery Initiative was founded to shine a light on the dark corners of the Kentucky legal system—from the abuse of ‘speedy trial’ rights to the misunderstood nature of the Alford Plea. We do not just advocate for one man’s exoneration; we advocate for the thousands of families currently navigating the crushing weight of systemic delay and prosecutorial overreach. My experience is now your resource.

“The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.”
Freedom is a Practice, Not Just a Plea
For most, the Statue of Liberty is a symbol. For me, after 2,000 days of pre-trial confinement, it is a witness. This footage represents the first time in six years I have navigated my own course—literally and legally. This is what the Willow Cherry Justice Initiative fights for: the moment a human being transitions back from ‘Case Number’ back to ‘Captain’ of the previously named Baraka, and others.
There is a misconception that recovery is a crowded room full of people talking. But often, the hardest work happens in the silence.
In this log from Long Beach Island, I’m not just repairing a solar panel or clearing a crab trap from my prop—I’m navigating the internal machinery of survival. You’ll see me struggle with a leg injury that makes simple movement a battle, and you’ll hear me grapple with the isolation of missing my children.
Why share this? Because the justice system tries to flatten a person into a single file number. But out here, fighting the elements and fixing what’s broken, I am forced to be whole again. This isn’t just a travel vlog; it’s a look at how we keep moving forward when the engine stalls and the only way out is through.
In both sailing and recovery, you rarely get a perfect day. You get headwinds, broken gear, and silence. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist (APSS), I teach my clients what the ocean taught me: Progress, not perfection. You don’t need to fix the whole system today; you just need to keep the bow pointed forward.
Willow Cherry is the Executive Director of The Willow Cherry Initiative. Following a wrongful conviction and an Alford Plea that exposed the deep fissures in the American justice system, Willow dedicated her life to systemic reform and advocacy for the incarcerated.
